The Auker-Seminick Chapter will celebrate SABR on 2/6/16.

Jackie Robinson’s birthday was January 31st so our meeting will start off with a tribute to Jackie. George Gedda will take about his days in Brooklyn when Jackie arrived. Gene Brock will tell his story of meeting Jackie as a youngster.

Jim Bard will present his book on Nellie Fox and what it was like growing up in Nellie Fox’s home town and knowing the Hall of Famer.

Skip McAfee, the editor of the Paul Dickinson Baseball Dictionary, will present his paper on the last words of many players. The subject sounds dark but will prove to be entertaining.

As time permits we will have discussion topics including the group’s thoughts on which current players should go into the Hall of Fame.

A group of 20 got together in Lakeland for some lively baseball talk.

Dr. Mike Marshall, 1974 Cy Young winner talked about pitching mechanics and how to avoid injuries. He is pictured with Marc Bostrom after the meeting.

Peter Golenbock read a selection from his next book on Lenny Dykstra.

Roy Kerr talked about the subject of his latest book, 19th century slugger, Big Sam Thompson.

David Chimura won an autographed Mike Marshall baseball card for winning a Mike Marshall trivia contest.

The Auker-Seminick chapter will be meeting at 10 am on 8/29 at the Larry Jackson library in Lakeland, FL. The library is at 1700 N Florida Ave.

Our special guest will be Dr Mike Marshall. Dr Marshall is a Cy Young winner and a doctor of kinesiology. His background in pitching and the body should provide for an interesting talk.

Two of our favorite local authors will also be in attendance. Peter Golenbock will be talking about his latest project on Lenny Dykstra. Roy Kerr will be talk about his latest book on 19th century great, Big Sam Thompson.

I’m sorry to announce, that due to a lack of interest, the June 7th meeting at Tropicana Field is being canceled. We don’t want to impose on the Rays hospitality for the few people who committed to attend. We’ll try to get another meeting scheduled for the near future. Thank you.

The Auker-Seminick Chapter will meet at 11 am, at Tropicana Field on Saturday June 7th. The meeting will go until 2:30ish. After the meeting, the Rays take on the Mariners at 4 pm.

Retired major league umpire Jim McKeon has committed to attend the meeting as our special guest, unless ESPN calls him in to work for the network.

We have reached out to a member of the Rays coaching staff about attending and are awaiting his answer.

We will have a discussion on the “Five”. If you could put just five players in the Hall of Fame, who span major league history, who would they be. Or do we need more then five?

Also, if any member would like to talk about a current or recent project, please let me know.

The Auker-Seminick Chapter will meet at Tropicana Field, the home of the Tampa Bay Rays, on Saturday, June 7th, 2012.

The meeting will be from 11 am to 2ish. We have contacted a member of the Rays coaching staff and a retired umpire about joining us at the meeting.

We will also have member presentations and a group discussion.

The Rays will take on the Mariners at 4:10 pm as we have a great day of baseball talk and action.

How would the great Negro Leaguers like Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and Oscar Charleston done in the majors?

The abilities of the Negro Leagues’ greatest players will always be a mystery because of the policy of segregation that MLB maintained until 1947. But the arguments and debate about how MLB history would have been impacted will always be a hot topic of discussion.

SABR member Bob May, in Honoring Black Ball, provides a fascinating insight into the Negro Leagues and its greatest players in Honoring Black Ball, recently published. The Auker-Seminick Chapter would like to invite Central Florida SABR members and friends to a group tour. SABR day is January 25th, 2014.

Let’s tour the St Petersburg Museum of History to see Schrader’s Little Cooperstown. This exhibit has over 4600 autographed baseballs plus many other exhibits on baseball.

You can also see a bit of the Tampa Bay area’s spring training history on display.

Let’s meet as a group at 10 am and tour together.
